What is their Role?
In critical care units, most patients are on several devices and life supporting machines including Mechanical Ventilator. While the Consultant makes critical decisions about the diagnosis and management, the nurse looks after the vital data, infusions, and feeding, charting and related aspects. In this scenario a critical area is the patient-machine interface which is vital and needs a 24x7 management & monitoring. This responsibility will be taken care by Respiratory Therapists.
Who are Respiratory Therapists?
Respiratory Therapists undergo full time training in Respiratory anatomy, physiology, diseases, medical physics, detailed training on handling ventilators, blood gas and acid base abnormalities etc. After their training they work as interns for 1 year, before they become eligible for employment.
What else can they do?
In addition to, intubation, ventilation, weaning and extubation in the ICUs, RTs can perform Pulmonary function Testing, Sleep studies, assist Bronchoscopies,c play a vital role in Pulmonary Rehabilitation programs, assist management making decisions in selecting the right equipment, devices, tubing and ventilators.
RTs save Money!
One RT can on an average handle about 4-6 patients on Ventilators, thus reduce the Patient- Nurse ratio, and also reduce valuable time and resources of the Intensivist/Consultant who can focus on more vital issues.
Starting Salary of RT
Is around Rs.10, 000 pm. to Rs.15, 000 pm. depending upon the candidate
